If you import paper packaging into Southeast Asia, the board that performs perfectly in a European showroom can fail in a Surabaya or Ho Chi Minh City warehouse. Humidity, stacking and container transit punish the wrong grade. Here is how to choose.
1. Match the board to the climate, not just the product
| Grade | Typical grammage | Best for | Performance in high humidity |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBS (solid bleached sulphate) | 300–400 gsm | Premium cosmetics, perfume, gift boxes | Excellent, with matte/gloss PP lamination |
| FBB / GC1 / GC2 (folding boxboard) | 250–350 gsm | Food, pharma, confectionery cartons | Very good, with dispersion varnish |
| CCNB (clay coated news back) | 350–500 gsm | Toys, hardware, household goods | Needs UV coating to avoid softening |
| Kraft (unbleached) | 280–450 gsm | Eco mailers, e-commerce parcels | Moderate, add a moisture-barrier liner |
2. Grain direction is not a detail
On humid days, carton board loses stiffness along the cross-grain. Grain should run parallel to the main fold line, or high-speed filling lines will crack the crease — a defect that shows up as returns, not as a complaint.
3. Ink and lamination choices carry compliance weight too
For food-contact cartons, low-migration inks and food-safe laminates are now expected by regulators — not just by brand owners. Indonesia's SNI 8218:2024 makes this explicit for food-contact paper packaging, and equivalent expectations appear in Saudi SASO/SABER, Philippine PS marking and EPR filings, and UAE ESMA submissions.
4. Ask your supplier four questions
- Which board grade and grammage do you recommend for my shipping route and storage conditions?
- What is the grain direction on the finished blank?
- Which food-contact documentation can you provide, and for which market?
- What is your reprint colour-matching process after 12 months?
